The Foundation for the Mid South recently announced its receipt of a grant that will expand its work to promote health and well–being in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The Foundation for the Mid South is one of 119 organizations awarded a grant by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation through its America Healing Initiative.

Specifically, the grant will help expand the Foundation for the Mid South’s work in partnership with the National League of Cities’ Youth, Education, and Families Institute. This project—Reducing Health Disparities in Small Southern Towns—will engage residents of up to 30 small towns in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi in community dialogues aimed at promoting health and well-being. The effort will reach out to those who lack access to the resources that support a healthy lifestyle, focusing specifically on reducing youth obesity and other related diseases. Strategies will include increasing access to healthy foods through tactics like community gardens and farmers’ markets, and on providing increased opportunities for physical activity.
