The FMS Hurricane Recovery and Restoration Fund was established to benefit those impacted by hurricane disasters in the Mid South. The Foundation, which has granted nearly over $11 million to nonprofits and recovery efforts in the region, provides timely and critical support to established nonprofit organizations in the region.
The Foundation is in a unique position to respond to disasters in the Gulf States. A regional community foundation, we serve 3 states (LA, MS, and LA) in contrast to one community or one county or parish, and our knowledge of of the region and nonprofit sector helps to match funding interests to committed local partners.
After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, FMS possessed several attributes both attractive to funding partners and important to equitable recovery efforts:
- We were unique in our mission and approaches.

We were regional and served the hardest hit areas.

We possessed vast knowledge of the region (i.e., its issues, opportunities, and challenges).

We offered fifteen years of experience in the region and possessed established networks of partners and grantees.

In the wake of unprecedented disasters in our region, several opportunities are available to the people of the region, especially in the often overlooked rural communities and the faith-based community. We have an opportunity to create a new Mid South—an equitable region that works for everyone. This is an opportunity for a relatively small regional nonprofit sector to make a huge difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people—especially those who are most vulnerable and who have the least ability to provide for themselves. And this is a time for all Mid Southerners to realize that pervasive and persistent poverty diminishes the quality of life of ALL of us - not just during a time of crisis, but every single day.
